Jim

JimHere we are, for the second part of SleepingDead‘s request: in The Walking Dead episode HoundedRick Grimes as a brief phone conversation with a man, who is later revealed to be Jim. Jim was a character that appeared in Season 1, portrayed by Andrew Rothenberg. He was one of the first victims of the plague inside the survivors’ group, and was also one of the original members of Atlanta‘s team. Let’s see who he was in the comics, of course prior to become a phone voice.

Jim probably has one of the most shocking pre-apocalypse stories among the survivors. He was a mechanic in Atlanta, and he had a simple life, with his wife, his son and his daughter. He lived with his mother, and he had a sister with at least three children of her own. He was in the city when the zombie apocalypse began, and he witnessed his boss being eaten alive by walkers, as he ran back home in shock. His family gathered altogether in his house, believing that it would have been safer for jimcomics1them to stay united. The Army had declared Atlanta a safe zone, and there were no reasons to be worried. Facts prove that the army was wrong, and Jim learnt it the harder way. Zombies soon took out the soldiers in the city, and got out of hand, spreading through the streets. Jim’s house was surrounded by walkers in no time, and the dead managed to get in, breaking doors and windows. Jim’s family unwillingly shielded him for a time enough for him to escape, and he was forced to watch as his beloved ones got dismembered and eaten alive. The last time he looked back, his wife was missing an eye and part of her face, while zombies where biting her neck and arms; his daughter had one arm missing, and his son was completely disemboweled, with his ribcage open and zombies eating his entrails; his mother was missing her lower jaw. With these horrendous images printed in his mind forever, Jim managed to flee, and was among the few who survived Atlanta’s outbreak. From that moment on, he had to live knowing that he owed his life to his family’s death.

Immediately after leaving Atlanta, Jim met other survivors, who were gathering in the outskirts of the city. He was welcomed among them, but, deeply shocked and emotionally devastated, he stayed taciturn for most of the time, never bonding with anyone. When one jimcomics2of the survivors, Donna, was attacked by a zombie and saved by chance by Dale, the group’s leaders, Rick Grimes and Shane Walsh, decided they needed more guns. Jim was able to point them to a gun store in Atlanta, thus indirectly providing more weapons for everyone. He also joined Shane during his target practice exercises. It was during a night that some zombies attacked the group, with most of the survivors off guard. One of the walkers jumped on Jim, who was taken by rage and, after reversing the zombie, started beating his head with the butt of his gun, crushing its skull while shouting that it killed his family. Shane had to pull Jim back from the dead body. It was only in that moment that Jim realized that he had been bitten, with his left arm dripping blood. For the futher days, Jim suffered from fever and other symptoms of the plague, and was taken care of by Donna and her husband Allen. He refused a mercy killing, and decided to let himself be transformed into a walker, hoping to meet again his dead family this way. He was abandoned by the rest of the group outside Atlanta, waiting for the transformation.

Jim is a silent and gloomy man, who lives in despair and sadness. He is overwhelmed by a strong sense of guilt, born from the fact that he survived thanks to his beloved ones’ sacrifice. He cannot find a reason to live but rage and hate towards the hideous creatures called the walkers, and interchanges anger to depression.
