grimlockfilmToday we’ll see the last (identifiable) character from the first trailer of Transformers: Age of Extinction. Probably, the best part of the trailer is when you see Optimus Prime breaking off some stone fortress riding what appears to be a mechanical Tyrannosaurus Rex: that is, almost out of any doubts, Grimlock, one of the most popular (and recognizable) Dinobots from the original series. Regarding his role in the movie, almost nothing is known: it’s quite positive he’ll be an ally to the Autobots, since he’s carrying Optimus on his back, but why he’s there and what he’ll do in the story, it’s all still crowded with mystery. Waiting to learn some more information, let’s see together who this lovely T-Rex is in the comics.

Grimlock was born millions of years ago on Cybertron, and took part to the great war between Autobots and Decepticons siding grimlockcomics1with the first ones. He proved to be an extremely powerful warrior, able to stand on the same level of powerhouses such as his own leader Optimus Prime or his nemesis Megatron, leader of the Decepticons, but his limited intellect kept him in the rear lines. However, when Optimus had to chose an elite squad to destroy a dangerous meteor swarm threatening Cybertron, he had no doubts regarding Grimlock, who was chosen as part of the crew of the Ark, the Autobots’ ship. The squad succesfully destroyed the swarm, but was later attacked by Megatron and some of his best men, who meant to crush their enemies while they were weakened. Grimlock fought with all his energies, but, at the end, Optimus decided to have the Ark crashed on Earth, a primitive and deserted planet far from Cybetron. The Autobots and the Decepticons fell into suspended animation, and that was supposed to be their state for the following millennia. However, destiny decided otherwise, and not all the Autobots stayed dormant: when Auntie, Ark’s computer, found out that Shockwave, a powerful and dangerous Decepticon, had come to Earth in search of Megatron and the others, it awakened five Autobots from their slumber to fight him, and Grimlock was among them.

Auntie scanned the biological readings in the nearby (dinosaurs), giving the chosen five something to “conceal” themselves with. Grimlock gained the ability to turn into a Tyrannosaurus Rex (sort of), and was chosen as the leader of the new strike team, calling themselves the Dinobots. With his teammates SludgeSlagSnarl and Swoop, Grimlock hunted Shockwave down with one of the grimlockcomics2Ark’s shuttles, and found him in Antarctica. The Dinobots fought their enemy, and managed to defeat him, burying him under a mountain. Unfortunately, this proved to be not a full victory, since they also fell into a tar pit, sinking without leaving a trace. Millions of years later, in 1984, the other Autobots (and Decepticons) woke up, bringing the old war on Earth as well. One of the Autobots, Huffer, found evidence of the battle between the Dinobots and Shockwave, and sent Ratchet to investigate…only to awaken Shockwave instead of their allies. While Shockwave defeated all the Autobots, Ratchet, the only one still standing, finally found the tar pit in which the Dinobots were trapped, and managed to reactivate them. He offered them a second chance to take down Shockwave once and for all, an offer Grimlock and the others gladly accepted. Cooperation between the two Autobots teams, however, proved to be difficult, as Grimlock didn’t make any effort to hide his dislike towards Optimus Prime’s leadership. Whether this grudge would have become dangerous or not, the future would have told.

Grimlock is a warrior just as arrogant as he is powerful: a terrific fighter, one of the biggest, stongest and most durable Autobot, he can count a few rivals on both the formations in the great war. With the ability to turn into a gigantic, mechanical T-Rex, Grimlock isn’t exactly smart, and firmly believes that the total annihilation of a problem is the best solution to it. He only believes in strength, and doesn’t like Optimus’ “obsession” with pity and compassion, as well as his attentions towards humans, but he respects his power; despite his lack of interest towards avoidable casualties, his loyalty is assured by the fact that he despises weakness, but he despises even more the abuse of strength, a trait that makes the Decepticons all the more hateful to him. An enormous power controlled by a weak mind, Grimlock is a precious assett for whoever managed to control or aim his rage…not exactly an easy task.
