Wolfgang von Strucker

Baron StruckerNow that Captain America: The Winter Soldier has come out in the US as well, we can speak about the post-credits scene: after both HYDRA and S.H.I.E.L.D. disband, Nick Fury says some HYDRA cells are still active somewhere in Europe. Just to confirm this, we spot a German man with a monocle speaking about a new era coming: he possesses Loki‘s sceptre, and holds prisoners two superpowered twins. The man is Baron Wolfgang von Strucker, portrayed by Thomas Kretschman. The character will appear again in Avengers: Age of Ultron as a secondary antagonist. He already appeared in TV movie Nick Fury: Agent of S.H.I.E.L.D. portrayed by Campbell Lane, but he was only a Nazi old man frozen solid and hunted down by Nick Fury. At the end of the movie, his daughter Andrea von Strucker revives him, and he walks away plotting revenge against S.H.I.E.L.D. In the comics, he’s a well known villain: let’s see together.

The von Struckers were a Prussian noble family, whose manor, following the Franco-Prussian War, was moved to Bavaria. Wolfgang was born at the end of the XIX Century, and was raised as the perfect heir to a family of military leaders: since his first baronstruckercomics1youth, he trained his body and mind in the art of war, and gained many scars in the (accomplished) effort of becoming fencing master of Heidelberg. When World War I engulfed Europe, von Strucker fought on Germany‘s side, imposing himself as one of the most skilled and feared German commanders. When, despite his victorious campaigns, Germany lost the war, von Strucker came back to his castle, later inheriting the title of Baron from his father. When Adolf Hitler rose to power, Baron von Strucker became one of his most trusted commanders, taking the lead of the Death’s Head Squadron and leading it against the Allies‘ forces. Baron Strucker collected a victory after the other, until the Allies put on the field their own heroes: Captain America and the Invaders, Nick Fury and the Howling Commandos, the American superhumans and elite soldiers beat every plan von Strucker tried to conceive. Eventually, Adolf Hitler grew tired of Strucker’s many losses, and ordered him to be executed. Luckily for the Baron, the Red Skull saw some potential in him, and sent him to Japan to find an independent Nazi organization, which would have been led by the Skull in a second moment. Baron Strucker did as he was told, and founded HYDRA, a scientific secret group led by Nazi ideals; however, he decided to lead it himself, excluding the Skull, who (apparently) met his end at the ends of Captain America at the end of the war.

Using the top research he was leading in HYDRA, von Strucker found a way to delay aging, and built for himself a nearly-immortal baronstruckercomics2body. He slowly transformed HYDRA into an international terrorist organization, developing a deadly biotoxin, the Deathspore Virus, to threaten the world. Also his nemesis, Nick Fury, became “immortal” through the Infinity Formula, and kept battling him from the intelligence agency S.H.I.E.L.D. Seeing potential in the enemy association, Strucker had some HYDRA agents infiltrate S.H.I.E.L.D. and send him intel from the inside, thus mantaining von Strucker always a step ahead of his enemies. The Baron brought his experiments even further, and when his wife Elisbeth became pregnant with twins, he experimented on them while they were still in the woman’s womb: when Andrea and Andreas were born, they manifested superhuman powers from their very infancy. Von Strucker had the twins fueled with Nazi ideals, betting on them for the supremacy of the “true Arian race”. When Captain American was revived and became a member of the Avengers, von Strucker finally revealed himself, and battled his old foe openly: despite the many defeats, von Strucker knew that, as long as S.H.I.E.L.D.’s corruption wasn’t discovered, HYDRA would have never been truly eradicated.

Wolfgang von Strucker is a proud, ruthless man, who only believes in the right coming from strength, and glorifies war as a means to impose his supremacy. Thanks to the many experiments and researches he conducted on his own body, Baron Strucker is nearly ageless, and has increased his physical attributes (strength, agility, speed, stamina, durability); he’s also a master tactician, an excellent hand-to-hand fighter, an exceptional swordsman and a skilled marksman. The Deathspore Virus which infected his body didn’t kill him, but granted him other superhuman abilities, such as the manipulation of the virus itself and a regenerative healing factor. His weapon of choice is the Satan Claw, a metal gauntlet which increases his already impressive strength, and allows him to shoot powerful energy beams. Deeply convinced of the righteousness of the Nazi ideals of racial supremacy, backed by the agent of HYDRA he himself founded, Baron Strucker is one of the most dangerous men alive, a terrorist seeking to restore a long-forgotten regime of terror.
