Alphonso Mackenzie

Al MackenzieNew pics have surfaced from the upcoming first episode of the second season of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., titled Shadows, and we got our first look at the whole new team assembled by Director Phil Coulson. Among the ones we already know, there’s a new face: Al Mackenzie, portrayed by Henry Simmons. In the show, Simmons will be a mechanic hired by Coulson to assist him and his team in the re-creation of S.H.I.E.L.D., following the events regarding its decommissioning. In the comics, Al Mackenzie has been many things, but certainly not a mechanic: he surely is linked to S.H.I.E.L.D., since he’s been one of the protagonists of the omonymous Marvel series. Anyway, let’s see together who this new agent is in the comics.

Alphonso Mackenzie, simply Al or Mac for friends, was born in AustinTexas. Always fascinated by the intelligence world, Al joined CIA, becoming a respected and renowned agent. Because of his skills and his personal contacts in the espionage world, Mackenzie was chosen as the perfect liaison with S.H.I.E.L.D., and he was stationed in the Helicarrier, the organization’s mobile base. Despite the constant sense of awkwardness in dealing with futuristic technology such as almackenziecomics1S.H.I.E.L.D.’s, Mac quite enjoyed working with them, and became friends with many experienced agents. It was quite a surprise when Jimmy Woo terminated his liaising, following the orders of the new appointed director Jasper Sitwell; Mac retired from S.H.I.E.L.D. and was ready to come back to CIA, but he stumbled upon some worrying discoveries: many S.H.I.E.L.D. agents, Woo and Sitwell included, had been replaced with Deltites, semi-sentient Life Model Decoys with not-so-good intentions. Mac tried to expose the conspiracy, but was eventually captured. Before the Deltites could replace him as well, he was saved by former director Nick Fury, now a rogue agent, and his protege Alexander Pierce. Mackenzie started fighting along with Fury and his unofficial team to take down the now corrupted S.H.I.E.L.D., proving to be a fundumental asset. In the meanwhile, he met and fell in love with Contessa Valentina Allegre de Fontaine, Fury’s ex lover. When the Deltites’ affair was finally solved with the destruction of all the LMDs and the decommissioning of S.H.I.E.L.D., Mackenzie came back to the CIA, and he brought along Val, who he had started a romantical relationship with. Working together for the Agency, the two became quite a formidable couple: they exploited an attempt of resurrection from HYDRA, and also discovered an alien threat, which they neutralized with the help of Nick Fury. Following the invasion’s events, Fury was convinced that the world needed a S.H.I.E.L.D., and he founded the organization again.

Among the first agents of the new incarnation of S.H.I.E.L.D. there were also Mackenzie and Valentina, but the atmosphere wasn’t exactly a nice one. Val used Mac for making Fury jealous, and more often then not she ended up embarassing them both. Mac stayed nevertheless, being quite pivotal in the discovery of some HYDRA moles within the new S.H.I.E.L.D., especially in the Super Soldiers unit. Because of Val, Mackenzie and Fury started to hold quite a grudge against each other, and the almackenziecomics2consequences proved to be pretty serious. When Fury formed a secret team of superheroes to launch an anauthorized assault on Latveria, an action that put in danger the entire USA because of the retaliation, Mackenzie contacted the Daily Bugle and revealed the whole story to their top reporter, Ben Urich. When Luke Cage was wounded by unknown attackers following his involvement in the Latveria mission, Mac contacted his wife Jessica Jones and revealed the truth to her as well, thus putting in danger Fury and alienating from him the entire superhero comunity. The informations given to Urich, then, brought the public opinion against Fury (especially after the Prime Minister of Latveria, Lucia Von Bardas, started an all-out war against Fury on American soil), and above all, they made him lose the trust of the international committee, forcing him to abandon his role as director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and to hide himself. Not happy with his victory against his rival, Mac resigned from S.H.I.E.L.D. and published a controversial book, UnSHIELDed: An Unauthorized Insider’s Look Behind the World’s Most Powerful Global Spy Network, in which he exposed much of Fury’s secret operations during his time as director, mining forever his reputation.

Al Mackenzie is a severe and professional spy, a traditionalist in his field attached to a ’60s-like spy world which is hopelessly outdated inside the futuristic S.H.I.E.L.D. Mac is an expert spy and tactician, a good hand-to-hand combatant and a proficient user of explosives; he’s also a master in interrogation, able to discover the slightest lie in a professional spy’s declaration. Unfortunately, he’s also quite hot-blooded, and his long-time grudge against Nick Fury, born from the two men’s jealousy for Valentina de Fontaine, led him into quite a dangerous path.
