Nuke (Frank Charles Simpson)

At first, when the casting was revealed and some promo pics were released, just speculation could be made about Wil Simpson, the NYPD detective who’ll appear as a secondary character in Jessica Jones; recently, however, actor Wil Traval (who’ll portray him) confirmed that the cop will actually be a reinvention of classic Marvel character Frank Simpson, better known to the readers as Nuke… and this means a lot of things, first of all that poor Jessica Jones will have to guard herself not only from enemies but from friends as well, since Simpson is renowned for being an extremely unbalanced, unstable and utterly dangerous man. Let’s see together.

Frank Simpson was the son of Charles Simpson and his drunken, abusive wife, an upper-class woman who made the lives of her husband and her son a living hell. As a kid, Frank grew up deeply traumatized by his mother’s behavior, and as a result he grew an obsessive affection towards his babysitter, a young woman he recognized as the only mother figure in his life. The girl, on her side, was in love with Frank’s father, and wanted Frank’s rich mother to pass away and to leave all her fortune to Charles. Knowing far too well what kind of influence she had on the boy, the girl talked him into killing his own mother, promising they would have stayed together without her around. Frank did what he was asked, and was happy to see that doing so he had allowed the babysitter to actually take his mother’s place. The boy’s murder, however, didn’t go nukecomics1completely unnoticed, as the secret organization Weapon Plus (the same that had given birth to Captain America during World War II) recognized some potential in him: for still unknown reasons, the directors of Weapon Plus chose Frank as the new recruit for their program, and sent one of their best agents, Logan, to kidnap the boy. Logan arrived to Simpsons’ house dressed as a cop, and organised everything so that nobody would have looked for a missing child with any hope of finding him alive: he shot the babysitter using Charles’ gun, and when the man found his beloved’s body lifeless, he committed suicide using the same gun. Following the double homicide, Logan took Frank along and brought him to the Weapon Plus’ base, where the boy was heavily experimented on to turn him into the new Super Soldier. When his “normal” training ended, Simpson was sent to Vietnam acting as a black ops agent during the war… only to find Logan again, who was posing as a Soviet agent. Logan tortured Simpson as part of the orders received by Weapon Plus, and implanted in him the trigger word “No V.C.!” (“V.C.” stood for Vietcongs), so that everytime Simpson would have heard that, he would have taken a gruesome vengeance for the tortures he underwent on anyone he had at hand. After the “programming” was complete, Logan allowed Simpson to escape, waiting for the right occasion to test him on the field.

Soon, Simpson arrived to a village, where the civilians, seeing he was an American soldier, started shouting “No V.C.!”, in order to be spared… unfortunately, they obtained exactly the opposite result, and Simpson went berserk, slaughtering every man, woman and child in the village. Logan, who was observing from a distance, communicated to the HQ that the experiment was a success, thus introducing Simpson to the final part of his “training”, adding his name to the top of the list for the Weapon VII program. Back to Weapon Plus, Simpson was subjected to even more experiments that made him a partial cyborg, with a metal skeleton, bulletproof skin, enhanced physical abilities, and a double heart that kept in check his psychothic rage (even if it made him addicted to pills that nukecomics2only Weapon Plus could provide). Simpson, code-named Nuke, was now the perfect soldier… unfortunately, his already fragile mind couldn’t bear all the tortures and programming, and he got mad, hallucinating about Vietcongs anywhere, and fiercely defending a violent patriotism that brought him to gruesomely kill anybody he believed was an enemy of America. Too unstable to be used in regular wars (least of all on American territory), Nuke was employed by the government as a mercenary to be sent as a special agent in other countries, helping secret allies such as dictators and warlords. For some years, Nuke was employed in Tierra Verde, where the local dictator Generalissimo Felix Guillermo Carridad enjoyed his ability (and his sadism) in annihilating the rebels opposing to his government. During his time in Tierra Verde, Nuke attracted the attention of The Kingpin, the lord of East Coast criminality: manipulating some corrupted officers who owed him favors, Kingpin managed to put his hands on Nuke, employing him in his personal war against the superhero Daredevil. Using his charisma, Kingpin convinced Nuke that Daredevil was a sworn enemy of the US, and sent him after the hero. Not knowing half measures, Nuke destroyed half of Hell’s Kitchen while pursuing Daredevil, causing a number of civilian casualties. Daredevil alone was unable to defeat the deranged cyborg, but luckily enough the Avengers intervened: the blind vigilante, along with Captain America, managed to subdue Simpson, who was however collected by the government after faking his death. Such a precious asset would have never been abandoned, and in no time Nuke was ready to be employed again.

Frank Simpson is a deeply traumatized and unbalanced man, suffering from a PTSD that makes him think he’s still fighting in the Vietnam War, hunting down dangerous Vietcongs who want to destroy the American Dream. Extremely patriotic, with his country’s flag tattooed on his face, Simpson cordially hates anyone who doesn’t like America… guess what he does to the ones who hate it. As Nuke, his cybernetic enhancements grant him superhuman strength and durability, while a constant rush of adrenaline given by his second heart keeps him in a state of rage, calmed down only by placebo pills given to him by his contractors to keep him in control; a sub-dermal mesh makes him bulletproof, while his cybernetic skeleton grants him a virtual invulnerability. He’s also an extremely well-trained soldier, expert in the use of any kind of firearm, deadly in knife-combat, and versatile in hand-to-hand combat. Lethal and schizophrenic, Nuke suffered from years of mental and physical abuse at the hands of the ones he’s now protecting: without a personal will, he follows the orders of the ones controlling him, the deadliest of puppets with all the sacred certainty of the crusaders fighting for a right cause.
