Blind Master (Moore)

The last character appearing in the Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins trailer is another member of the Arashikage Clan, seen as he is trying to recruit Snake Eyes to the cause: he’s the Blind Master, portrayed by Peter Mensah. We already saw the character in G.I. Joe: Retaliation, in a horrible version portrayed by Robert Fitzgerald with really bad make-up. In the movie, he was the new leader of the Arashikage Clan, the one who sends Snake Eyes and Jinx after Storm Shadow, and also the one who correctly deduces that Storm Shadow was framed for the death of the Hard Master by Zartan. In the comics, he looks very different from the one we saw in Retaliation, but he’s not exactly similar to the one in Snake Eyes either. Let’s see together.

Moore, first name unknown, was born in Denver, Colorado, and apart from that, nothing else is known about his past. We know that Moore had some experience with the military, and it’s possible that he got blinded while in the army. Life as a blind black man couldn’t have been easy, especially for a man of action such as him, but he found a new purpose in Japan, where he was taken in by the Hard Master, the leader of the legendary Arashikage Clan, a sect of ninjas operating for centuries. The Hard Master trained him to see the world without his eyes, to move and even fight better than when he could see, and even more than that he offered him a new family. With the clan leaders Hard Master and Soft Master, with the swordsmith Onihashi, and with his fellow disciples Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, Moore learnt a new way of life, not just martial arts, and found hope where he believed there would have been none. Unfortunately, this wasn’t meant to last, as the Hard Master was suddenly killed, apparently by his own nephew Storm Shadow, and the Clan didn’t survive him. Moore, however, didn’t want all those teachings to go to waste, and he decided that he would have brought the same hope he had experienced to others. He took with him Jinx, the eight years old cousin of Storm Shadow, and moved back to Denver, where he opened a dojo. Known as Sensei Moore, first, and as the Blind Master, later, he trained Jinx as his first disciple, but others soon followed: Sgt. Ralph Badducci, later known as Nunchuk, and Tyrone, were among his best disciples. Then came a man, one who didn’t remember who he was, and who sought help.

The young man was Billy Kesseler, and even if he didn’t remember it, he was the son of Cobra Commander. The Blind Master, however, didn’t care who he used to be: all he cared for was that Billy needed help, and as soon as Jinx had tested him, he was more than willing to provide it to him. It was immediately clear that Billy knew quite a lot despite being amnesiac, as he recognized his tattoo as the same one carried by Snake Eyes and Storm Shadow, who he knew somehow. The Blind Master didn’t tell him everything, but he confirmed to him that he carried the Arashikage Clan’s hexagram, the three straight lines and the three broken lines that, together, represented unity, balance and harmony. He showed Billy a picture of his Arashikage group, and then he entrusted the young man to Jinx, who would have brought him to San Francisco to the G.I. Joe Team to further investigate his past. In the meanwhile, it had become clear that it was time even for the Blind Master to come back to the field, and he left his dojo to his disciples, moving in to help his former comrade Snake Eyes. When three Joes, Stalker, Snow Job and Quick Kick, were abducted in Borovia, and the rest of the team found themselves unable to rescue them if they wanted to avoid a diplomatic incident, the Blind Master offered his help, and contacted Scarlett, the Joes’ intelligence expert. He then met her and Snake Eyes in Grenada, and pretending to be just a nice, blind stranger he asked for their help, separating them from their teammates Lady Jaye and Flint, who didn’t know anything of the planned operation. When the trio was involved in an explosion, the other two believed them to be dead, but the Blind Master had prepared everything to actually fake their death, so that they could proceed to save the prisoners without implying the G.I. Joe Team. This first mission brought the Blind Master on a path he had left years before, a path, however, that would have led him face to face with the Hard Master’s real killer…

Sensei Moore is a honorable man and a charismatic teacher, one who has received a gift in his past, and who dedicated his life to giving that same gift back to other young people needing it. As the Blind Master, he’s a formidable martial artist, with senses keen enough to perceive the world as if he still had his sight, with the bonus of being immune to visual deceits such as Zartan’s holograms; he’s also a proficient user of modern weaponry, as he’s been seen using grenades and other explosives with lethal precision. A once broken man who is now trying to fix others in search of peace and balance, the Blind Master knows that teaching is the only way to plant the seeds of a better future, but the call of the battlefield is still strong, and his beliefs will be put to the test at the perspective of an easy vengeance against the man who took everything from him.
