Morgan Stark

Avengers: Endgame has been roaring at the box offices for about a week now, and we’re ready to take a look at the three new characters who managed to find themselves a little space among the gigantic crowd of returning ones (of course, mind minor spoiler if you didn’t watch the movie yet). The one who’ll conquer most hearts is undoubtedly little Morgan Stark, Tony‘s and Pepper‘s five-years-old daughter. She loves her father three-thousand, in the film, and everyone loves her back… quite a jump from the comics. Originally, in fact, Morgan is not a cute little girl, but a mean adult man, always a relative of Tony Stark, but his cousin. Let’s take a look.

Morgan Stark was born in Long Island, New York, the only son of Edward Stark. Edward was the brother of the more famous Howard Stark, and for a while the two ran together Stark Industries, the family company; one day, though, Edward lost all control of the billionaire company to his brother. Morgan felt to be cheated of his legacy, and from that moment he nurtured a deep hatred towards his uncle Howard and even his cousin Tony, who he saw as the one who was enjoying all the luxury, the fortune and the popularity that should have been his by right. What Morgan didn’t know was that Edward had actually asked Howard to be bought out of the company, since he couldn’t handle the stress of managing such a big conglomerate and preferred a more tranquil kind of life, but a perceived injustice is just as strong a motivator as a real one, and Morgan became relentless in his attempts to reclaim his family’s slice of the cake. Of course, hatred alone couldn’t do much, and for years Morgan was all bark and no bite… until one day, in Europe, he was heard mumbling about his kinship with Tony Stark by some important officers of the Maggia, who introduced him to Count Nefaria, their leader. Seeing in the good-for-nothing idiot a chance to get rid of Stark, Nefaria gave Morgan the means to his revenge: a Visio-Projector, a device that could project realistic holograms, that he would have used to drive his cousin insane; in exchange, Morgan Stark would have finally become the Stark in “Stark Industries”. With a perfect plan in mind, Morgan returned to the United States, and called Tony for his help.

At first, the plan worked out perfectly: Morgan projected the image of a spy rocket with a bomb inside, and as Tony called a bomb squad, they obviously found the place deserted. Wanting to up the scale, Morgan started to make Tony hallucinate about aliens, and after the umpteenth false alarm Senator Hamilton Byrd began a petition to undo the contracts between Stark and the US Army. On the verge of failure, Tony came back to the field of the first sighting to scan the area, and Morgan tailed him with his Visio-Projector ready… but aliens truly came this time, hostile scouts from Froma. Chased by the aliens, Morgan Stark was saved by Iron Man, who later forced him to make a public announcement taking the blame for the most recent episodes, confirming Stark’s sanity. Defeated and humiliated, Morgan came back to Europe for the worst part: facing Count Nefaria after his failure. What was supposed to be a one-time cooperation obviously became much more, and Morgan found himself in the uncomfortable situation of being indebted to one of the most powerful crime bosses of the world. He kept working for him for years, aiding Madame Masque, Mordecai Midas and others in their attempt to seize Stark Industries, always clashing with Iron Man in the process. Finally, he got rid of his link with Nefaria, exploiting a major defeat of Maggia, but he didn’t give up on reclaiming “his” company: he hired the mercenary group Stockpile, and sent them against Iron Man and War Machine; he also “accompanied” them, taking control by remote of the android Brass. The two armored heroes destroyed Brass and defeated the rest of Stockpile, but failed to see the bigger picture: from inside Stark Industries, Morgan could now take control of all the Iron Man armors in the Armory, and was eager to use them all against his loathed cousin…

Morgan Stark is a boastful, resentful and vengeful man, a petty gambler whose ambitions surpass by far his skills. Not as intelligent as he’d like to think, Morgan is more often than not manipulated by people (sometimes even machines) more capable than he is, but he thinks to be always in control. He doesn’t have any ability worth mentioning, but he often uses advanced tech provided to him by others, such as the Video-Projector, the neural link that allows him to control androids by remote, even the giant robot Ultimo. Needless to say, most of the times he has in his hands much more power than he can handle…
