Nezarr the Calculator

When, in Eternals, the mighty Arishem the Judge explains to Sersi the purpose and the origin of the Celestials, several of them can be seen in the Eternal‘s vision: the first appearing from the cosmic dust, overseeing an entire galaxy, is a blue Celestial, named Nezarr the Calculator. In the movie, Nezarr appears only for this brief cameo, but in the comics he has a more active role, as he’s one of the Celestials who come over to Earth millennium after millennium to monitor the advancement of human, Eternal and Deviant societies. Let’s see together.

A Celestial ancient as the universe and imbued with unlimited cosmic powers, Nezarr the Calculator was part of Arishem the Judge’s host, and he followed him to fulfill his purpose, that was to use the data collected by the others for impossible calculations, that gave results that in turn had to be interpreted and judged upon by Arishem, to be then sent back to the Fulcrum. Nezarr was seen participating in particular to two great projects of the Celestials: the greatest one was the birth of the Black Galaxy, a semi-sentient bio-verse unique in his kind, that over the eons gave birth to rare creatures such as Ego the Living Planet and to the youngest space god, the Blue Celestial. The second project was apparently small and unimportant, if not for the unprecedented consequences it led to: Earth, a small blue planet on which the First Host planted the seeds of three civilizations as usual, humans, Eternals and Deviants. It was during the Second Host that Earth became unique: as the Deviants had become the dominant species, Arishem decided to annihilate them for unknown reason, but as Tiamut the Communicator rebelled to such a decision, Nezarr joined Arishem and his brothers Jemiah the Analyzer, Hargen the Measurer and Tefral the Surveyor against Tiamut, overpowering him and forcing him into a deep slumber, going as far as separating his soul from his body to prevent his awakening. The reasons behind these actions remain a mystery, but Nezarr and the others continued their work as if nothing had ever happened, and they came back for the Third Host, seeing that they had indeed modified the course of the planet’s evolution, as now humans were the dominant species and the Eternals kept the Deviants at bay. During the Fourth Host, again, something rare if not unique happened, and Nezarr was at the center of it.

As it usually happened with advanced societies, the Celestials’ arrival didn’t go unnoticed, nor the space gods were exactly welcome. Nezarr the Calculator landed in the Soviet Union, where he started collecting the data he needed. The local human army, commanded by General Greshkov, interpreting the colossal giant’s presence as a threat (and he wasn’t exactly wrong in this sense), launched a massive nuclear attack against him, with enough missiles to wipe out an entire continent. Nezarr wasn’t even fazed by the attack, that didn’t left a single mark on his impenetrable armor, but to avoid further distractions he projected in the mind of his assailants a vision of the missiles sent back to them: the sheer terror of it was enough to make the entire Soviet Army faint, and their brains, believing they had been annihilated by a nuclear holocaust, shut down, sending general and soldiers into a deep coma. This way, Nezarr could continue his work undisturbed… but the humans’ interference wasn’t the last one, nor most definitely the most powerful one. Also the local gods had decided to react to a judgement that could have marked the end of the planet, and Odin Allfather, king of the Asgardian gods, imbued the mythical Destroyer with his own essence and with that of all other Asgardians. The Destroyer, more powerful than ever and armed with the Odinsword, attacked the Celestials, and found Nezarr on its way for first: with a swift move, the Destroyer cut off one of Nezarr’s arms… and in that moment, the space god finally noticed it. Nezarr regenerated his lost limb in a matter of moments, and then proceeded to hit the Destroyer with a massive blast of cosmic energy, reducing the theoretically indestructible artifact to a smoldering pile of melted Uru metal. Nothing could stand in the way of the Celestials’ judgement, and it was about time that also the gods learnt it.

Nezarr the Calculator is a serious and dedicated being, completely devoted to his purpose, not allowing anything to distract him from his duty. As a Celestial, he’s a nearly omnipotent being, an immortal and indestructible space god who can manipulate energy and matter on cosmic scale. Among his peers, Nezarr can be the most brutal one, but that’s only a collateral effect of his commitment: when something threatens to distract him from his work, he reacts with unparalleled destructive force, a lesson for both the present and future attackers.
