Elita One

We mentioned her before, and here she is in all her pink glory: Elita One, the next character we meet in breaking down Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen. Just as Chromia before her, also Elita Ones is presented as a sentient component of Arcee, and she’s voiced by Grey DeLisles as well. Albeit she’s given a huge background in the tie-in material, in the movie she appears briefly at the beginning in Shanghai, and she’s later seen in Egypt as she is killed during the last battle. Luckily, the original Elita is a bit more relevant than this.

Elita One was born millions of years ago on planet Cybertron, albeit it would be better to say “reborn”: she was once a mysterious time traveler named Ariel, who was destroyed in battle along with her boyfriend Orion Pax. The two of them arrived from a war-torn future into the past, where they met the impossibly old and wise Alpha Trion who, following Orion’s request, agreed to rebuild them both upon their death into new beings. Orion Pax’s components were used to build the Autobot hero Optimus Prime, while Ariel’s ones became his female counterpart, Elita One… and almost if led by the destiny of their predecessors, the two of them became inseparable. Those were the early days of the Great War between Autobots and Decepticons, a conflict that would have tormented Cybertron for ages, and Elita One was one of the fiercest warriors around, a relentless hunter of Decepticons, who however had a deeply compassionate heart that led her to defend all those who couldn’t fight for themselves. She didn’t know anything of her true origins, but she had maintained a strong bond with Alpha Trion, who she regarded as her mentor, and she contacted via holo-link every time she needed guidance over a particularly difficult decision. Elita One spent five million years fighting against the Decepticons, and as the war went on and the female Cybertronians went almost extinct, she became a role model for the few remaining, who formed her elite squad. She led Chromia, Firestar, Moonracer, Greenlight and Lancer in brave and audacious missions, always coming out on top, and more often than not cooperating with Optimus Prime’s team, making good use of their affinity and coordination. Then, one day, Prime left on the Ark with some of his best men to save Cybertron from the threat of a meteor shower: Elita One tried to follow him, but she ended up falling in a trap led by the Decepticons, who wanted to ambush Optimus, and she was apparently destroyed in the following firefight.

Elita One, however, did not perish as it seemed, as her squad promptly rescued her and nurtured her back to health. The mission’s outcome turned out to be even more critical than expected: the Autobots had lost their leader Optimus Prime and some of his best warriors, but also the Decepticons had lost their leader Megatron, as both ships involved in the battle had disappeared from known space. The balance of power on Cybertron changed drastically in a very short time (at least for Cybertronian standards): in a matter of a few millennia, Shockwave managed to seize control of the Decepticon factions and to organize them into a relentless military power, and the Autobot cells were forced to scatter and to go into hiding, giving birth to an active resistance against the new planetary tyranny. Elita One and her team were among these small factions, committed to small acts of sabotage and guerrilla, making plans for a hopeful future in which they would have been able to join forces with other Autobots and reclaim Cybertron. Needing to supply her team, Elita One had been stealing Energon right from under Shockwave’s nose for years, and this would have gone on forever if not for the carelessness of Moonracer, who fell into a trap and alerted the enemy of their existence… and most of all of the location of their base. This was the team’s direst day… and also the one that enlightened everything with hope: Elita One sacrificed herself to let her squad escape, and she was captured by the attackers, Starscream, Rumble, Astrotrain and Ramjet… all Decepticons who had allegedly died with Megatron four million years before. Both ships had crashed on a remote planet, Earth, but their occupants were alive and well: the Decepticons had managed to build a space bridge to link Earth to Cybertron, and now they were using it to send in troops. Elita One was captured by the enemy, and used as bait to lure Optimus Prime home: she was defeated and in chains, but she now knew that her beloved lived, and that they would have soon fought again side by side.

Elita One is a brave and charismatic leader, a powerful warrior who has no pity for her enemies, but who’s ready and willing to fight on behalf of all those who can’t protect themselves. As all Cybertronians she’s much stronger and durable than any human, and she can turn into alternate mode, a Cybertronian car, gaining superhuman speed, and a Cybertronian jet, obtaining the ability to fly; she’s a formidable warrior, and her energy gun is among the most powerful hand weapons around, but her most stunning ability is also the one she almost never uses: by draining her own life force, she can stop time itself, becoming unstoppable at the cost of her own life. A strong warrior and a noble leader, Elita One has earnt the loyalty of all Autobots and the love of their leader: she’s a restless freedom fighter, who has dedicated more than one existence to the cause, and is ready to do it again.
