Zero-G (Alexander “Alex” Power)

Now we’re finally starting to meet the individual members of the eponymous super-group protagonist of Power Pack, starting with the older brother, Alex Power. Better known as Zero-G, he’s shown in the pilot to be quite the responsible one, always fixing his younger siblings’ messes, and a model student too. Nathaniel Moreau‘s version in the show appears to possess generic super strength, but his powers go well beyond that, as his moniker implies: let’s take a better look.

Born in Richmond, Virginia, Alex was the eldest son of James and Margaret Power. He moved with his parents to Munhiggin Island, Maine, when James got a job in a governmental R&D facility, and soon three siblings arrived: Julie, Jack and Katie. Albeit only a kid, Alex felt the responsibility of being the eldest, and always looked out for his siblings… but he wasn’t prepared to the kind and weight of role he was soon to have. Both his parents, in fact, were kidnapped by the Z’nrx, a race of alien warmongering conquerors, and the Power siblings received the visit of Whitey, a colleague of James who, in reality, was member of another alien race, the Kymellians. Out of alternatives, dying for the wounds he had received by the Z’nrx, Whitey bestowed the four kids with his own powers, splitting them among the siblings so that they could reach full potential only acting as one: Alex received power over gravity, being now able to make himself and others extremely heavy or virtually weightless at will. Alex and his siblings promised to the dying Whitey that they would have used their abilities to save the world from the Z’nrx (that they soon started calling Snarks for simplicity)… and since they were kids, the first way they could thing of doing it was by becoming superheroes. They called themselves collectively the Power Pack (quite a giveaway on their identity…), and Alex named himself Gee, referring to the letter G used in physics to identify gravitational force… but since not so many people got the reference, he soon opted for a more direct Zero-G. Helped by Whitey’s sentient ship Friday, the Power Pack embarked on their first mission: saving their parents from the Snarks. Since the very first moment, it was clear that Alex was meant to be the leader of the group, even if just for “seniority”, and he actually turned out to be pretty good: while still learning how to use their powers effectively, the Power Pack defeated the Snarks, freed their parents, destroyed the machine their father had built and the aliens were after, and safely returned to Earth… all the while never revealing themselves to James and Margaret.

Keeping their newfound powers and unofficial “work” as superheroes secret from their parents was something Alex immediately insisted upon, and even if not everyone agreed with it they all accepted to do their best to maintain the secret. The Power Pack had several heroic outings, even teaming up with other adult teams like the X-Men or the Fantastic Four, and in the latter case they befriended Mr. Fantastic‘s and Invisible Woman‘s son, Franklin Richards, who even became a honorary member of the Power Pack after aiding them against the Snark prince Jakal with his precognitive abilities (they called him Tattletale). The Snarks proved to be the greatest threats to the family of heroes, and once they even managed to kidnap all four of them and bring them to their planet. Here, the Power Pack discovered that they could actually exchange powers one with the other, something they started using as a tactical advantage that first of all allowed them to escape the Snark planet in one piece, and second made them an even more effective force for justice, both against regular human criminals and against supernatural threats like the Bogeyman. Eventually, however, all kids started longing for simpler lives, similar to the kids their age, and decided to lay low… all but Alex, who felt all the responsibility coming from his new status. When Bandit and Hindsight asked for help to save the other New Warriors from the Sphinx, Alex stepped in, and in order not to involve his younger siblings he absorbed their powers and used them to rescue his new friends with the new nickname PowerPax. When everything was solved, Alex returned the powers to his siblings, apologizing and promising to never do that again… but he broke his promise when he returned to the New Warriors as Powerhouse, again taking his siblings’ abilities with no intention of giving them back, as the life of a superhero was too dangerous for kids so young. Eventually, however, Alex quit the New Warriors to return to his real family: back to being Zero-G, he was now ready to be a true big brother, and not just a bossy leader.

Alex Power is the eldest member of the Power Pack, and he feels all the responsibility of leading his younger siblings into battle against alien conquerors, legendary monsters and even “simple” robbers or drug dealers. As Zero-G, he can project Anti-Gravitons to negate the gravitational pull over himself, thus becoming able to fly, or over anything he can project his gravity distortion field upon, thus making even several tons heavy objects be light as a feather; he can also do the opposite, projecting Gravitons to make himself or other things extremely heavy; as all members of the team, he can share with others his life force accelerating their healing, and he can exchange powers with his siblings, or even absorb them all for himself. Extremely intelligent and constantly worried for his family, Zero-G is the de-facto leader of Power Pack, a teen grown too fast who does his best to balance his love for his siblings and the shared responsibility of putting themselves on the line of danger to keep their promise to save the world.
